Tears

So, I discovered today that there are some books I can't read in public, because the first one I read today at the bookstore had me in tears. I HATE CRYING, and if it involves kids or animals, the tear ducts flood. The saddest line I've ever read was in this book. The main character is a trauma counselor, and she gets called in for natural disasters, fires, when somebody has been in a hostage situation, etc. She's been in one area dealing with a flood, and doing her best to help one family in particular, when there's a school shooting, and the best friend of the oldest kid in this family is the first one shot. At the funeral of this kid, Adam says to his mom, "Can I come back here tomorrow? Tim's gonna be lonely." How am I supposed to read this without crying? It's NOT GONNA HAPPEN!
On the bright side, I read another Carol O'Connell mystery, Crime School, and I figured out who the Scarecrow is right before we were given a substantial clue to his identity. And I had the other guy pegged too, although there was a little while I was thinking of someone else.
I'm working on an original idea that's taken hold and won't let go. Honestly, I don't like working on more than one thing at a time. But this one is coming in SO clearly, I can't NOT work on it. If I put it aside for later, I don't think I'd ever get to it, and if I did, it wouldn't be the same.

Have you read "The Cold Equations" by Tom Godwin? Great short story but I never have been able to read it without crying.
