She leaned across the table, oblivious to the French fries leaving salt and grease on her skin-tight black shirt, and kissed him again. “Not that I’m complaining, but you seem to be doing that a lot. Please, don’t see that as me complaining. For the love of God, don’t see that as me complaining.” He spoke with his trademark grin on his face.
She shrugged, smiling at him. “Hey, what can I say? I like kissing. And you’re pretty good at it. And willing. So, what the hell? Why not?” She laughed. “Did you see Scarlet and B’s faces? The only one of your gal-pals that seemed to be taking it okay was Anya. Serves Scarlet right for the hair trick she pulled. And B? Damn, but that felt good. I don’t think I’ve ever put the shock on her that bad. Guess it came from putting the moves on ‘her’ boytoy.” She stretched and noticed that he’d stiffened. And not from her stretching. “What?”
“Was that what this was about? Getting back at Willow and surprising Buffy?”
Surprised, she said, “Is that what you think?” It wasn’t actually a question; she could tell by looking in his eye. “Asshole.” She stood up.
“Wait.” He sighed. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“Not a whole lot of ways that could be taken. Look.” She streaked her fingers through her hair, trying to pull it back. “I like you, okay? This isn’t coming easy for me. But something about you makes me wanna try this. I promised you in the hospital that night that I wouldn’t hurt you. I’ve told you, I don’t break promises. And using you to get back at your friend, would hurt you.”
“You’re still counting that promise?” When she’d first promised, he’d thought she said it simply to calm him down. Then he figured it was a one-time thing. But she was keeping it going?
She shrugged. “Yeah, so? I just told you. I keep my promises. Why’re you making a big deal out of it?”
“Oh, I wouldn’t be, except that I counted that promise kept months ago, when you didn’t kill me for my drugged-up attitude. But you’re still going strong with it. I reacted wrong, okay? I know you better than that.” He gave her an apologetic grin. “Don’t punish me by withholding kisses. I’m sure you can think of plenty of other ways.”
She gave a low throaty laugh that sent all the blood rushing away from his head. “No big. Let’s get back to the hotel. We’re only sticking around for another day, and I’m all for using our room while we got privacy.”
He raised an eyebrow. “Our room?”
She shrugged one shoulder. “I had a little talk with Giles about the room arrangements. He cleaned his glasses and told me to pass on to you that he doesn’t want to know.”
“Wow, you braved the G-man. I’m impressed.”
“What’s the deal with his glasses? The only time they’re dirty is when someone says something about sex.”
