(First paragraph is copy and pasted from a comment that I made in another note.)

When I use the word love, I don't mean it so much as a "feeling", because feelings come and go. Rather, it's a choice that you make ALL THE TIME, to put this person ahead of yourself. That's my definition of any love. Romantic love is... indescribable. Putting the other person ahead of yourself so thoroughly that you put their happiness and well being above your needs. For you to be happy, THEY have to be happy.

I saw the movie "Prom Date". The remake, I mean. And (SPOILER, for anyone who hasn't seen it, and doesn't want to be spoiled) the first scene demonstrates what love is to me. This girl (I'll call her Brittany, since she was played by Brittany Snow... Unless that's Amy Snow...) came home from a night with her friends at the movies. She found her dad and her brother, dead. When she heard a noise, she crawled under the bed. The killer came in, dragging her mom with him, and asked where Amy was. Mom said that Amy was spending the night at a friend's. Killer through Mom on the floor, Mom is looking RIGHT AT AMY, and the killer asks again. WHile looking into Amy's eyes, Mom repeats, "She's spending the night at a friend's house."

I was talking to my dad about this. See, my daddy is John Mclain from the Die Hard movies, particularly "Live Free or Die Hard". Anyone touches his little girl, he will do ANYTHING to get her safe. (He and I had this conversation, and I said, "You know, I really do think you'd shoot yourself through the shoulder if it would kill the bad guy." His response? "If they touched my daughter, you bet your ass I would.") My dad loves me, and anyone tries to hurt me, and he's in a position to do something about it, he will make. Them. PAY.

My mom, however, is this mom, right here. I know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that if that had been my family right there, my dad and brother would have gone down fighting with everything they had. My mom would have fought. But ultimately, in that position, I KNOW that if I were under the bed, and she was on the floor, looking RIGHT AT ME while being asked where I was, I KNOW that she would lie.

Because that's what love is. Love is doing everything you can to keep the other person safe, even when the price is your life.

And after all, that's essentially what Christ did for us.
