As I told aadler, there were aspects that were supposed to happen when I originally started to write that wound up not happening (which is fine).
They were actually supposed to separate, and Doug was going to chase Kate down and make her come back for an Olympics because he'd promised her.
There were supposed to be three Olympic cycles in which they didn't get gold, and the fourth one they did. (The reason I ditched that idea was because I really wanted them to win with them playing how people see them for the long program, and it made sense for them to do it after missing a cycle and coming back. And also, I didn't want to write another description of a long program.)
It's always interesting to see what makes it into a story and what doesn't.
