Peeves
Okay, so I read an entry in Nemo Gravis's journal yesterday, and started to THINK about it today. DOn't ask me why, but I did. He was mentioning pet peeves when reading fanfiction, and I'd have to say that I agree with him. I hate bad grammer, and it's unforgivable to post a story with a character's name spelled wrong. (I've written an email, gotten ready to send it, and then realized that the whole way through, I'd typed in Cordeliah, but I checked, darn it.)
But having people referred to as something other than their name? I don't mind. I know that I personally do it. "Willow said," "Buffy answered," "Xander countered," "Giles responded," gets old fast. At the same time, you don't want to do, "The brunette gave a derisive snort, the redhead quirked a half smile, and the blonde didn't even try to hide her amusement." without a good reason. Intersperse it in a paragraph though...
"Look, you guys just don't get it. It's all right for you to make mistakes, but I don't have to worry about them."
The redhead quirked a half smile, that clearly said she knew what was coming. "So what do you do instead?"
The brunette tossed her head and snorted derisively. "I don't make them." The duh was heard in her tones.
"Right. Keep on saying that, and it might happen. Ask the right demon, and wishes are granted." The blonde didn't even bother to hide her amusement, which obviously rankled Cordelia.
See what I mean? Granted, I'm not going to say that's well done, I just wrote from the top of my head, but, when done right, that type of thing works. But like anything else in the world, moderation.
